Circle of Life: Death – part 3

Death is the final part of the triptych ‘Circle of Life’.  It is also my favourite piece and the starting point for the whole idea.  Death came first for me.  Again it is a combination of stumpwork and applique, but much more applique with only the boney hands really constituting stumpwork.   I took my inspiraton from a National Geographic photograph of the catacombs of the Capuchin Monks.  A completely goolish and facinating collection of souls that were mummified, some more than 400 years ago.  This particular chap seemed to be in slightly better shape than some and I have now come to think of him as rather stately.   The symbol is the mathematical symbol for the infinity, which I thought appropritate for this stage of life’s cycle.
